Development of a Methodology for Estimating the Availability of ADAS-Dependent Road Infrastructure

Advanced driver assist systems are being promoted with the expectation that enhanced support will mitigate road trauma. While these technologies optimised for certain and traffic conditions, not all roads across Australasia equipped ADAS-supportive infrastructure. This study developed a desk-top methodology using classes (disaggregated by remoteness levels) to estimate presence of quality roads, delineation speed signage in Victoria, Australia. Aerial imagery mapping data were used assess number random locations based on protocol. The demonstrated major arterial levels had high-quality sealed surfaces but 42% remote unsealed. Delineation (crucial lane systems) absent 73% sub-arterial independent remoteness, 96% regional areas. Speed sign availability areas was sparse, only 65% assessed having signage. Results reflective Victoria’s funding model consistent on-road audits conducted other researchers. enables proportion ADAS-ready be estimated so benefits ADAS can quantified investments into infrastructure readily allocated.
